A great afternoon and evening was had by a packed crowd at Horsham Sports Club on Saturday for this year`s Big Gig and the HH crew went to check out the line up.
First on was the fabulous Joe 90 with a great blend of Britpop and punk classics. Blur's Parklife felt particularly apt on a lazy summer`s afternoon. The band's rendition of Should I Stay or Should I Go? was excellent and definitely made the audience want to do the former. From the Jam to Franz Ferdinand to the Arctic Monkeys, Joe 90 delivered a seamless set which really set the tone for the afternoon.
After a short break we were treated to No Jacket Required, a Kent and Sussex based Phil Collins tribute act. Again another great set and really reminiscent of the real thing. We're sure Mr Collins would more than approve of the professional delivery of greats like In the Air Tonight and Against all Odds. Truly worth seeing.
The Take That Experience certainly brought back the magic of the famous Manchester boy band. Performing classics such as Relight My Fire, and Pray, they had the crowd waving and singing back and individual members had their turns to shine including Mark on Shine and a great rendition of Angels by Robbie Williams.
Then came the Blunter Brothers, a band with a 30 year pedigree in delivering flawless funk and soul covers. The musicianship of the band would have made James Brown himself proud as they churned out frenetic funk covers turning the atmosphere to fever pitch and packing the dance floor (or field, as it happened to be). Keeping the funk alive and the feet pounding with covers from the JB’s, Stevie Wonder and Curtis Mayfield with what can only be described as some epic horn solos, the BBs once again fail to disappoint.
Topping the bill were Swede Dreamz, a tribute to Abba. Again the dance field was packed with revellers as the band played faultless renditions of SOS, Waterloo, Take a Chance on Me, Mamma Mia and many other timeless hits. Swede Dreamz really recapture the magic of the original band and captivated the crowd completely.
As well as the music there was a relaxed family atmosphere with a large slide and merry go round for the kids and glitter face painting. The crowd was a great mix of all ages and the setting was beautiful with Denne Hill in the background and a home cricket match on the other side of the field (which Horsham won). People set up gazebos and picnics all across the site which gave a real festival feel.
All in all a great family day out and we can’t wait for next year`s event.
