England 1959. A free-spirited war widow in a small seaside town risks everything, in the face of polite but ruthless local opposition, to open a bookshop. However, the decision turns out to be a minefield. Exposing the locals to cutting-edge literature such as Nabokov’s 'Lolita' and Ray Bradbury’s 'Fahrenheit 451' upsets provincial attitudes and triggers a political awakening in the town.
The film is based on the novel of the same name by Penelope Fitzgerald.
